HAZWOPER is Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, covered by OSHA’s standard 1910.120. It covers organizations that have hazardous materials, such as hazardous waste cleanup sites, facilities with hazardous chemicals that require an emergency response team, or hazmat cleanup operations.

Annual Certification
OSHA requires an annual refresher to maintain HAZWOPER certification. We highly recommend quarterly refreshers so employees keep their skills sharp.

Which HAZWOPER course do I need?
Requirements depend on the employee’s assigned duties and worksite. Many hazardous-waste cleanup workers need 40 hours of off-site instruction plus supervised field experience; limited-site workers may qualify for 24 hours. Emergency-response roles range from Awareness through Operations (at least 8 hours), Technician (at least 24 hours at the Operations level), and Incident Commander (at least 24 hours at the Operations level plus specified competencies). We can help determine the right course for your team.
How often is HAZWOPER refresher required?
Refresher requirements depend on the work and responder role. For many hazardous-waste cleanup workers, OSHA requires 8 hours annually. For emergency-response personnel, annual refresher training must maintain competency, or employees must demonstrate competency at least yearly. Provenio also recommends shorter, recurring practice so skills stay sharp.
