Many people write safety policies that are too long and detailed. Policies should not be training documents or cite regulations in detail, nor should they focus on every possible situation, but rather break down the company’s policy, who is responsible for what, and the general “how” we do things. The detailed “how” should be in training. The language should be easy for any employee of any reading level to understand, they layout should be easy to read and they should be easily accessible by any employee, during any shift.
When policies and procedures are too long or difficult to read, employees do not read or know them, and therefore do not follow them.
